1953 Triumph Thunderbird

The other day, a hefty and quite remarkable book arrived in the mail. It’s called Modern Motorcycle Mechanics, and it’s the seventh edition of a guide that first appeared in 1942. If you own a pre-70s bike, be it an Ariel or a BSA or a Norton, you need this manual on your shelf. It’s the sort of book that would make me feel confident about owning and maintaining a pre-unit Triumph, like this lightly customized machine from New York.

The bike was built by Neil Fenton of the brilliantly named White Knights in The House of Color, a collective of builders who stage the Brooklyn Invitational bike show.

Ask most people to visualize a ‘classic motorcycle’ and the image that springs to mind will probably be a Triton. It’s a simple and elegant style, and although dozens have been submitted to Bike EXIF over the years, they still catch my eye. This one is owned by Australian Colin Cox, who bought it on eBay in 2007. It’s a 1961 Norton Featherbed frame with a 1967 Triumph T120R motor; up front are Norton Roadholder front forks with Manx springs, and Suzuki GT750 brakes. Mr Martini's Triumph

One of Italy’s most prolific custom builders is Verona-based Nicola Martini, better known as Mr Martini. He specializes in Triumph customs, and his Super Cooper—which we featured two years ago—is one of my favorite bikes of all time. ‘Shorty’ is the latest machine from the Mr Martini stable, and it’s based on a 2006 Triumph Bonneville.


Mods are relatively light, keeping the bike practical, but custom parts include an aluminum swingarm, dirt-track influenced bodywork, new bars and risers, and a custom leather saddle. Bitubo shocks keep the back end planted, and the 790cc motor gets a boost from a free-flowing intake and a delectable exhaust system, custom made for Mr Martini by Zard.


It’s one of those bikes that has a definite retro style but also just begs to be ridden hard—one of the side benefits of the current flat/dirt/street tracker trend, don’t you think?

Update:  Just got a note from an ADV rider poster who wrote in.

Loadedagain of advrider here... I see you've got Tom Mellors silver bullet posted today. Just an FYI... He's got a 1000cc engine in it now. it ran in 2010 as a 1000cc bike....Ii was at his place a couple weekends ago... the crazy dude is going for 200mph in 2011! My bet is he'll make it.

I lifted this verbatim off of an ADV rider thread.  Just too cool

750MPS-PG class (750cc Modified Production pushrod, pump fuel [gas], partially streamlined — the front wheel must be visible for 180 degrees below the axle), 180.317mph


750MP-PG class (750cc Modified Production pushrod, pump fuel, with no bodywork, but with the rear fairing left on since it counts as being the seat), 159.905mph


Unbelievable numbers for a pushrod 750 on gasoline (remember Bonneville is a little over 4,300' in elevation). Tom put a lot of people on the trailer with those numbers. Gorgeous bike!

I wonder what Triumph would have to charge for an Ohlins/Brembo/Marchesini equipped Thruxton?  Cause I'm pretty sure I'd want one!
